Oh, this week’s post is going to be yummy!!! Are you ready? Good, here we go!
Your ingredient this week is: Dream
When was the last time you let yourself dream? I remember a time in my life where just keeping my head above water was about all I could manage. Life really just felt hard. I was a single mother, living on government benefits and dealing with the fallout of the choices I’d made. I couldn’t hold a job because of all of the drama and the instability in my life, my son was having some rather serious problems, the school officials and teachers were pushing me to make decisions that I wasn’t sure were right but I didn’t know what else to do, and there was a revolving door at the courthouse with my name on it from the continual legal problems with my ex. So life really wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies.
One night, a new friend called and we were talking about some event that was coming up and he started to ask me about what I wanted to do, what kind of outfit I might wear if I were to go to something like that… and I couldn’t answer him. I said, “I don’t know and why even think about that? It’s not going to happen.” His response was simple, “I’m not trying to get you to do anything, I’m just asking you to dream.” Wow.
I’ve thought about that conversation many times. At first, it was actually upsetting for me. I realize now that this was because it all felt SO far out of my reach that it was almost painful to think about what I believed I could not have. And that’s what happens when hope is absent. Now, I’ve come to understand that dreaming is essential. Nothing is possible until we believe it might be possible. When you’re coming from the space I lived in then, you can either stay there and wallow or you can make a decision to change things. It’s probably obvious that I did the latter. I decided that the way I was living was ridiculous. I couldn’t even buy my son fresh fruit and vegetables in the middle of the month! And I had accepted that. I felt like I had no choice – until I realized that something else may just be possible and chose something different. John, if you’re reading this, thank you for making me see beyond my circumstances!!
Do you know the beauty of dreaming? It doesn’t have to be even remotely possible! You can try things on and imagine how they might feel, you can spend time in new places with people you may never meet in real life, and doing things you may never do. There are no rules! You can do whatever you may wish. And do you know what that can begin to create for you? Possibilities! If you can imagine yourself sailing around the world, who can say that it’s not possible? If you can imagine yourself wearing nice clothes and going to exciting places, maybe you could do those things. If you can imagine yourself doing work that you love, perhaps you’ll have the courage and the chutzpah to start doing what’s necessary to make it happen. Nothing is possible until you believe it might be possible.
So let me ask you, do you dream or are you occupying the space where I used to live? If you could wave a magic wand, what would your life look like? Now that, my friend, can be a very yummy space. And when you can start to consider what’s possible, you can start putting your time and energy toward creating something that may, right now, seem out of reach. I can’t promise you that you can have everything you can dream about, but what I can promise you is that you can’t improve your situation if you don’t believe you can. And really, if you aim for the stars and only hit the moon, how awesome is that?!
To dream or not to dream. That is the question – at least this week. LOL
What do you choose?
